THIS IS OUR LAST ASSIGNMENT OF THE YEAR.
In the last few years, across Canada, statues, buildings and street signs dedicated to prominent Canadian historical figures have been vandalized. Often, if not always, these acts of vandalism stand against the actions by which these monuments are meant to commemorate. Take, for example, the John A. Macdonald monument at Place du Canada in downtown Montreal. The statue is dedicated to Canada's first prime minister and a Father of Confederation was defaced by protestors who left a message stating that Macdonald was a "colonist" and that he "contributed to the genocide of Indigenous peoples." Acts of vandalism like this have happened all across Canada, including British Columbia.
Assignment:
In this assignment, a Final Skills Check, you will be investigating ONE of these particular acts of vandalism in order to critically examine whether the monument (the statue, building, or street sign) should stand/ remain OR should it be removed to become more representative of our current value system.
In the [ File ] link below, the Final Skills Check is broken down in manageable steps for you to complete. Also provided are the rubrics under investigation, specifically Criteria C: Communicating and Criteria D: Thinking Critically.
