Upon completing our previous unit on "Counting Crime," we learned about "how" crime statistics and information are collected in Canada. This assignment on "Correlates of Criminal Behaviour" will serve as an introduction as to "why" criminals commit the crimes that they do.
Correlates of crime are variables that are connected to crime. However, it is important to understand that correlation is not the same as causation. While the correlates under examination are in some ways connected with criminal behaviour, they do not necessarily cause crime. Instead, each correlate should be viewed as one of a more complex assortment of factors that contribute to criminal acts. There are six major correlates of crime:
- age
- gender
- race
- drug and alcohol use
- socioeconomic status
- region/ spatial location
Assignment:
Using the link below, describe/ discuss how each of these six socio-demographic variables are correlated with crime.
This can be completed as a chart in point form.
